Ivory
Dimensions:
24.5 × 15.6 cm
Description:
The figures on this ivory flanking the central figure of Christ can be identified by the inscriptions as Romanos and Eudokia. They are probably Romanos II (938–963) and his child wife Bertha, the illegitimate daughter of a European king, who took the Greek name Eudokia at her wedding (d. 949). The imagery helps to assert that the couple's right to rule comes directly from Christ.
