Virgin and Child sculpture
Type:
Sculptures
Date:
1125–1150
Location or Findspot (Modern-Day Country):
Italy
Medium:
Limestone
Dimensions:
74 × 40 × 22 cm
Description:
Unlike more typical wooden sculptures of the Virgin and Child, this moment of intimacy between the two figures is executed in limestone. Instead of Christ gazing impassively outwards or gesturing in blessing, the two share a tender embrace and turn their heads towards each other in a moment that emphasizes their humanity. Although the original polychromy has faded, it is still clear that the Virgin's robes would have been a regal blue.
