Description:
This case from Fatimid Egypt once held a miniature Qur'an. It is adorned with golden filigree decoration (patterns made from wire) and granulation (tiny balls applied to the surface). It was designed to be worn as a protective talisman and still has one of the two loops from which it would have been suspended. The central panel on the front, surrounded by by scrolling ornament, would once have had an inset gem. The back has a pattern of hexagons.
