Salón Rico

Date: 953–57
Location or Findspot (Modern-Day Country): Spain
Description: The so-called Salón Rico ("rich chamber") was a reception hall and mirador (place for viewing) in the caliphal city of Madinat al-Zahra'. From its elevated vantage, the Umayyad caliph 'Abd al-Rahman III could survey the lands he controlled. The alternating red and white voussoirs of the arches in the Salón Rico deliberately recalled the architecture of the Great Mosque of Córdoba, but the carved stucco decoration makes this caliphal hall even more ornate.
