Description:
De Materia Medica (On Medicinal Materials) was written by Dioskorides (d. 90), a Greek physician and botanist. His work of natural history focuses on medicinal plants, along with certain animals and minerals with medicinal properties. During the Middle Ages, the text was transmitted in extensively illustrated Byzantine copies as well as Arabic translations, such as the thirteenth-century manuscript of Khawass al-Ashjar (The Characteristics of Trees) from which this folio was taken.
