Description: Prince Vladimir of Kyiv (r. 980–1015; also known as Vladimir "the Great") adopted Orthodox Christianity on behalf of the Kyivan Rus' in 988. He appears on his coins with a cross-mounted staff in one hand and a trident in the other. This trident, a feature of subsequent seals and coins of the Kyivan Rus', was adopted as the state coat of arms of Ukraine in 1992. On the reverse of Vladimir's coins, Christ (identifiable by the cross-nimbus) holds a book.
