Description:
This thirteenth-century gilt-copper pyx, or small, round container, has the distinctive colors (lapis blue, turquoise, and white) of champlevé enamels from Limoges. The monogram of Christ (IHS = IH[SU]S, or Jesus) appears on the sides and the conical lid. The pyx would have held eucharistic wafers.
