Model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple period

Type: Cities, Temples
Date: Model commissioned in 1966
Location or Findspot (Modern-Day Country): Israel
Dimensions: 2,000 square metres
Description: This 1:50 scale model in the Israel Museum represents the city of Jerusalem before Roman legions destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. The details of the reconstruction were based on archeological findings and historical sources. The prominent Temple visible in this model does not reflect Solomon's original Temple, which was destroyed by the Babylonians in the sixth century BCE, but rather its subsequent reconstruction under King Herod, after many Jews returned from exile in Mesopotamia.
