Description:
This Carolingian intaglio, or engraved gem, has a crucifixion scene engraved into rock crystal. John and Mary flank Jesus on the cross together with two centurions who hold the sponge and spear. Bust personifications of the sun and moon face towards the inscription that reads "IHS NAZAREN REX IV" (an abbreviation of "Jesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum," or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). The effects of different lighting on carved rock crystal are evident from the two photographs reproduced here. The reverse (back) of the intaglio is shown here photographed in natural light. Like the Susanna Crystal, this intaglio was designed to be viewed through the unengraved side, meaning that inscriptions and other elements of the composition had to be rendered in reverse. The mount is a modern addition.
