Coin of Romulus Augustulus
Type:
Coins
Date:
475–76
Location or Findspot (Modern-Day Country):
Italy
Medium:
Gold
Description:
Flavius Romulus Augustus was known as Romulus Augustulus ("little emperor") because he was still a child when he became Roman emperor (r. 475–76 CE). The Eastern Roman empire never recognized his legitimacy, and he was overthrown by Odoacer, the Hunnic or Skirian leader of rebellious Germanic troops. Even though he is known as the last Western Roman emperor and 476 is sometimes considered the formal end of the Western Roman empire, it was not a moment of radical historical change.
This coin shows a frontal bust of Romulus Augustulus wearing a helmet and pearl diadem while holding a spear and shield.
