Description:
This panel of St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata was originally part of a two-sided wooden panel with the Coronation of the Virgin on the other side. A Franciscan confraternity in Fabriano commissioned the piece from Gentile da Fabriano (ca. 1370–1427) and used it during processions in honor of the Virgin. In this panel, Francis witnesses a six-winged angel while praying and receives wounds matching those of Christ, in his hands, feet, and side.
