Description:
This woven silk fragment may have come from the large cemetery at Panopolis (now Akhmim), which was a major weaving site in Byzantine Egypt. Large textiles with repeating patterns were often cut down and used to adorn tunics. This particular example has a vine-scroll lattice with rosettes at the intersection points, as well as paired, symmetrical birds arranged within the resulting lozenges.
